Establishing Your Timeline

One of the most critical pieces of planning any event is establishing your timeline. Not only does it lay out your event from start to finish, it gives you a full oversight of what’s happening when and allows you to make nips and tucks easily throughout your planning process. Additionally, it allows you a fuller sense of control and a true relief of stress knowing that you can peek at your timeline to make sure x,y, and z are already mapped out.

It can be a daunting task, but baby steps will get you there just the same and more easily than trying to take it all on at once. Here’s how we like to tackle timelines for our clients:

  1. Start from the end and work back to the beginning.

  2. Fill in major details first: big picture items such as hair and make up

  3. Fill in small details next: vendor arrival times (florist, DJ, officiant, etc)

  4. Fill in as much minutiae as possible/you want to know: music queues, floral drop times, etc

When creating your timeline, you will work closely with all of your vendors to fill in the small details - they will be able to offer many recommendations on start and arrival times - but ultimately you are the boss.

If you find this is too much to take on remember, Sterling Weddings and Events offers a variety of
